Using ZoneAlarm for the first time

Once you have installed ZoneAlarm, a warning window will pop up each time you try to access the Internet. This is to protect you from any spyware or other malicious software on your computer that can try to access the Internet without your knowledge. If you know the programme is one you trust, like your browser or email programme, you can tell ZoneAlarm to always let the programme access the Internet without asking permission.

Let's say you want to view a webpage in the Opera web browser. You select Start - Opera to open the browser.

ZoneAlarm does not allow Opera to access the Internet, as it is not a trusted programme. Instead, it asks you if you want Opera to access the Internet. Because you trust this programme, you select the Remember this setting checkbox, and click on Allow.

ZoneAlarm adds Opera to its list of trusted programmes and allows it to access the Internet.
